Peters, Powells Research Notebooks, Notebook V, pp 129-134: In the Willard Powell material was a badly written one sheet letter of 12 Feb 1859 by Joshua to Allen L. Dean as follows:
"Dear Cousin: I suppose you have been looking for a letter from me for some time but Hannah has been sick for ten weeks and is not so she can turn over in bed yet. She went down to Father [John G.} Bedell's and was not able to come home, and I am afraid it will be some time before she will be able to walk. Sarah Dickingson has had a pair of twins, a boy and girl, and the rest of our friends are as well as usual. Joel [brother of Allen L. Dean] is living on his interest this winter. His wife's sister lives with them this winter. I don't go there much for Joel is afraid that I will have had hard feelings towards her. You know that I am not any such boy. We have got our prayer, that said. Note, Joel don't come into the store much for last winter and he and Henry got mad playing checkers and Joel don't forget it. I wish you would come out and fetch you wife for I want to see you both very much. Excuse this short letter and I will write more in my next in regard to Joel's affairs. I should think he was rather hard up. I don't know how he will come out. . . . Give my love to all of your folks and Uncle Enos [Montross] folks and the rest."
