Notes |
- Enlisted at Upper Darby, Pvt. in 1st Co. of Col. John L. Pearson regiment
Military service: Bet. 1812 - 1814, Fought in the War of 1812
1840 Census: No names are listed in the census except Head of Household. The following names have been surmised from research of later census and other records -- Joseph (50); Mary (43); Isabella (19); Sarah (18); James (15); Mary Jane (13); Margaret (10); Eliza (8); Joseph (4); Unk female (<5); Unk female (<5)
(Research):By John Matviya - I was in Harrisburg at the State Archives. The pension records of Joseph Biddle for his service in the war of 1812. The archives have three categories of records for that war: an index of military service; final settlements; and pension records. I used the index to find the microfilm I wanted to look at the pension records (an application). I did not have time to look at final settlements to even see what it was. Our Joseph Biddle was listed in the index (only one Joseph) and I copied the 4 pages of the pension application. Joseph Biddle's application indicates that he was a resident of Allegheny County at the time of the filing, on the 12th of June 1869. He said that he was "duly enlisted at Upper Derby (Darby) (now part of Philadelphia)" about May 1812 and served as a Private in 1st company commanded by Capt John Hall and attached to regiment commanded by Col. John L. Pearson that served until the 10th day of January, 1814" and that he was honorably discharged on or about June 1814. He swore that he had not received any other compensation from the government and made his Mark. On the 3rd page appears an affidavit by one of his two witnesses: William Biddle, who also on June 12, 1869 appeared before the government official and swore that he was a resident of Allegheny County PA and was "well acquainted with Joseph Biddle" and his war service. On the fourth page, same date, both William Biddle and James Biddle swear that they are personally acquainted with Joseph and his service. William made his mark but James signed the document himself.
Besides giving the date of service in that war, the document tells us that in 1812 Joseph was probably living near Darby where he enlisted.
Only one listed.

As expected, Kenneth David Biddle and Donald Rei Biddle, both direct-line descendants of Joseph H. Biddle are close matches. Unexpectedly, they both also matched, just as closely, Y-DNA samples from two persons with different surnames. They match two people whose ancestors are George BECHTOL (c1772-1858) and Johann Burkhart BECHTEL (c1725-1790). They are part of the Bechtel/Bechtol Y-DNA Project group.
It is believed that for some reason,'Joseph H Biddle' or his father, changed their name from 'Bechtel' or 'Bechtol' to 'Biddle'.
