Grace Hooper, Pioneer Notes, Elk Rapids, MI: Fen's Rim Publications, Inc., 1993, pp 358-359: After John moved his family to Oneida County, he "drove an old gray horse [named Frank] and top buggy to the Vienna school house a half mile away one Sunday and to Bernard's Bay, eight miles away to the Quaker church the next Sunday. There was a partition through the center of the latter church building. When business meetings were held, the men on one side held their meeting, the women on the other side conducted theirs. On Sundays, the partition, or curtain, was raised, making one room. In the large churchyard nearby a number of Bedell relatives were buried.

"One Sunday, small granddaughter, Ada, who went with them became so tired of sitting through the quiet hour or more when no one felt moved to speak, she became frightened and cried. She asked if she might drive old Frank going home, and to comfort her, the grandfather let her do so. They met another buggy coming along the narrow, clay road and they locked wheels.

"There were five boys and five girls in the Bedell family. The father [John] would not allow the children to go to the neighborhood parties, but George helped the girls steal away. They threw their best clothes out the upstairs window and he took them to a neighbor's house where the girls put them on and went to the party."
